First Steps

Got back to work today and had a driving lesson after two weeks off of both because of my knee. Tomorrow is a bigger day though. I've decided it's the day to go to the gym, mainly because it's when training is and I'm not ready to go back to that yet.
First I'll just do a fast walk and then decide whether I feel comfortable enough to have a little jog. Fingers crossed I don't tweak anything!

Knee...

Well, I haven't posted in ages...
Had the first competitive League game Saturday before last and injured myself in the first minute. Played on because I thought it would go away, but I could tell it could give me trouble after the game. I brought myself off after 60 minutes because it was giving me problems. Next day(with a hangover after a big night out, which probably didn't aid my knee) I woke up with a swollen knee and it was pretty painful. Went to A&E the next day and turned out I'd torn the cartilage in my knee. The doctor didn't seem to think it was that bad, so I was pretty surprised when he said it may be up to 8 weeks until I can play Football again...
I'm going in tomorrow for a check and hopefully they'll say it won't be that long, but I'm pretty bummed as it is...
Bring on November!

Feel the Burn

Thought I better post seeing as I haven't in a while. My loyal fan base must not know what to do with themselves. I definitely should be writing an essay, but this is a good way to put it off for a little longer.
Yesterday was Football training. Yesterday was a very hard session of Football training. It has been the only time I've remembered in a long time when I've actually not wanted to play a game of Football. After an hour and a bit of thigh burners, passing, heading, dribbling and control drills and sprints I was completely done, and so was the training, until someone suggested that we overrun and play a game as well. Normally I would be right up for it, but I literally wanted to die. My legs were in agony and I was completely out of breath. Though, after a couple of minutes of rest it seemed worth doing again!
It was the first time I'd done the thigh burners and sprints in the same session. The sprints were right at the end and the rest of the training had clearly taken it's toll on everyone there. The feeling after was very, very good though!
I ave neglected the gym AGAIN this past week, so I must go tomorrow and get burning some calories and getting my cardio fitness up! My excuse for this week is a hangover from a weekend in Wolverhampton lasting several days...

Driving Me Crazy

Let's get the title out of the way first. I've been driving lots and stuff and that's a really poor pun for you all, which is possibly stolen from Man to Man with Dean Learner. I had my first lesson in aaages earlier and it was very nervy. He kindly pointed out all the bad habits I'd picked up just driving with Mum. No surprises there.
In other news, I played in a friendly on Wednesday and came on for the last 35 minutes or something. It was great to get in to a proper full-sized match and I think I did ok. We had training on Saturday as well, though only 10 people turned up and I know 3 people weren't there because they went out the night before. I was assured they'd be there but I assumed that they wouldn't be, and I was right. Slackers.
I haven't actually been to the gym too much because of a slight niggly knee thing, but I did go today for a run. Well, I had planned on just doing a run, but I went at it a bit hard at the start with a few sprints and only ended up running for just over 20 minutes and then moved on to a few leg weights. Tomorrow I think I'll just go for a steady 45 minute run. I haven't done enough to burn off last night's Lick'n Chicken meal and a Pizza that I had at a not-so enjoyable gig. I'll make it for it tomorrow though. I will I will I will.

Aching

The weekend just gone was a tiring one. On Thursday and Friday I got some runs in before Football on Saturday. On Thursday I wanted to try and recreate a game of Football on the treadmill, which isn't really possible, but I gave it a go anyway. It involved walking, slow jogging, fast jogging and sprinting(or as fast as I feel I can safely run on a treadmill) and it wasn't fun, but I need to be doing stuff like that, I feel.
On Friday I planned on doing a nice slow, easy run for about half an hour, but instead I did a faster than usual run for 25 minutes, but I was feeling ok on Saturday so I don't think I overdid it at all.

Saturday... Saturday was a good day, but a good day that went very slowly and quite painfully at times. I had work at 6.30 then finished at 10.30 and me and the boss went straight from there to Football to take part in the 8-a-side tournament. At first I thought I was going to have to play every game because we originally only had 8, but then we had 10 so I was worried I wouldn't get to play at all. However, our player manager did in his knee in the first game and one of the players went to play cricket after the second so I ended up playing every game but the first one.

I got put on the left wing, which I wasn't expecting, but I didn't end up doing too much attacking, mainly because I was worried I'd completely knacker myself out having to track back after sprinting all the way up. I had quite a lot of banter coming my way from some idiots who I'd been at school with sat at the side of the pitch and I also got hacked quite a few times  during the tournament. One guy gave me a kick as I went past him and got a good talking to from the ref. Still feeling that one. The hardest thing about the tournament was probably all the waiting in between games though. There was only one pitch and with ten teams involved we were waiting half an hour for each game. After the second game everyone started getting pretty stiff so we definitely weren't feeling 100% for most of it.

Anyway, we somehow managed to get ourselves through to the semis and went out to a team who I think are a league or two higher, so it wasn't bad at all after our performances at the start. I'm definitely still feeling it now and I wanted to go to the gym tonight but I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

Time to eat a pie...

Panic

Been to the gym and a couple of times, including today, but am now really just doing running, exclusively. Someone on the Football team said he just wants me to do cardio to get fit. I'm not sure how serious he was being, but that's what is actually going to be useful to me so it is now going to be the majority of what I do at the gym.
My visit today was a Football related run and it wasn't particularly fun. I mixed in sprints with fast running, slow running and walking, but nothing for any more than 2 minutes. I did it for 45 minutes and was pretty tired at the end, which isn't great, but at least I lasted up to then.
I'm playing my first ever matches with the team this weekend and I'm pretty nervous. It's an 8-a-side tournament on full size pitches and the matches are all 10 minutes. As far as I know, there are only 8 of us going, so I'm going to have to play every game and I'm probably going to be completely knackered after 2... or maybe the first 1... I haven't got any skills in the locker to impress and gloss over the heavy panting, so I'll just have to defend stoutly and try not to make any mistakes.
I've just had a pie(and some weird 'gravy' I made to go with it... it was strange) to put back on any calories I've burnt off and am about to go on a drive with Mum. However much it'll be great to have the freedom of driving, I still dread each time I go out... But I'm 21 and it's getting silly.

Monday 25 July 2011

Freedom...

I moved it up a notch today with a 6 mile run and a sprint at the end. I held the sprint for a minute and it completely knackered me out, which felt great! I feel like I should be running on the road because it's all I've really been doing at the gym, but I think I'd be more likely to stop when I got a bit tired if I was on the road. I did a few other exercises too for a bit of a stomach workout, but nothing big.
I have Football training tomorrow evening and I'm hoping my legs aren't sore at all from the run. They seem fine at the moment so it's looking good.
Also learning to drive at the moment. This is actually my third stint because I never really stick at it as I really dislike it. But now I'm at the point where it's just annoying not having the freedom and I want to be able to drive back from Bath to play Football at home twice a week so I really need to stick at it this time! haven't gone for a drive today but tomorrow we're going for a longer one than yesterday and going to try and get a bit closer to the city.

Saturday 23 July 2011

Back in the game!

So I just got back from Football training and it wasn't as horrible as I was anticipating. The sprints were easier this time, but I think that's down to them being made slightly shorter rather than being better at them. I'm guessing the manager thought they were a bit mean last time.
I've also been for a run at the gym the last two days, doing 5 miles with a sprint at the end both times. They weren't as bad as I thought, as I anticipated hell after not going for a proper run for about 3 weeks or something. I feel like I'm back in to it now and it helps that I've been to the Pub the last two nights and have completely avoided alcohol drinking only squash and water. Go me!
Football training again on Tuesday will hopefully( and I can't believe I'm saying this) be a bit more punishing, because I really need to get fitter for matches!

Detox

Ok, so I'm probably not going to properly detox in any sort of way, but I definitely need to eat better after the past week. It has been an amazing week though! 2000trees festival was absolutely incredible and I'm buying a ticket for next year as soon as I have the money. Then the visit to Exeter was great too. I probably spent half the time laughing.
Now I'm back and I don't have any massive things planned for a while I am gonna try and properly get back in to the gym. I'm going for a run today that will probably be horrible, but I obviously need to get back in to it.
Wish me luck!

Thursday 14 July 2011

Football

Yesterday was the start of pre-season training and, my god, some of it was tough. The intense fitness training was punishing. We had to run a series of sprints(more like fast runs) to and from cones and get back to the start within 25 secs, doing that 5 times with 30 second rests in between. Obviously that doesn't mean much if you don't know the distances, but I'm pretty sure that combined distance was over 100m and it had 3 turns in it. The fourth and fifth were horrible, but that kind of thing always feels worth it. We also did a series of exercises that included burpees, mountain walking and some little bend-jump thing. The rest was ball-related stuff and the match at the end was fun.
If I hadn't of been invited I probably would never have turned up, so now I have been once I am happy to keep going! I'm off to a festival for three days now though and then off to a friend's for a couple of nights in Exeter a day after I get back from that, so not much fitness for me over the next week :S

Friday 8 July 2011

Forgetful...

Well, this last week hasn't been the most productive... I played Football on Monday and got myself a nice blister because I wore socks with holes in. Doh! Tuesday morning I didn't realise I was supposed to be working, which was stupid, and then I made the same mistake Wednesday morning. Lucky I get on with my boss as I probably would have suffered by missing two shifts in a row anywhere else.
I played Football Wednesday night too and, even though I wore two pairs of socks with no holes in, my blister was quite painful after. I also went to the gym twice this week, but didn't run either time because of the blister, so I just did weights. Neither session was particularly great, but it's better than not going.
The problem with not having been to the gym much is that I feel much guiltier about eating rubbish and drinking, which happened again because a mate had a free house. Though playing a game of Risk probably burned all the calories...

Sunday 3 July 2011

Naughty Week...

Oh dear, so after a weekend of naughtiness I thought I'd got my exercise back on track. After one day of that seeming true, I ended up spending 3 days at my mate's house. Not only did we go in to town two of those three nights, we also had pizza for tea every night and food in town after the night out. I spent way too much money and have let myself down a bit. I'm going to try and avoid going out for a week because I want to avoid drinking, but also because I don't think I can afford it.
What I can afford is going to the gym! I went yesterday, but I was pretty hungover so it wasn't the most productive session. I did try that crazy 8s thing I've mentioned before and I just about managed to do it. I had to stop briefly on the way down but a friend drove me on. It was horrible, but I might put that down to being hungover and having already done all the other thigh weight machines in the gym because some guy was just sat on the leg press doing nothing for ages...
I really didn't feel like a run as I thought I'd be sick, so I just tuck with the leg weights and then went on the cross-trainer for a bit at the end because I've never used it before. It feels a bit weird to me, so maybe it takes a bit of getting used to?
Time to start eating better again and that can start today! Bring on a run tomorrow!

Tuesday 28 June 2011

Naughty Weekend

The weekend just gone was not a good weekend for my health. It mainly involved drinking and eating. Saturday night was a failed night out, ending in a foot long Subway, though it was one of the least calorific, but still not great. Sunday involved a trip to Cardiff for a Pizza Express and then to a gig. The worst part though, was a McDonalds after, which I just couldn't resist. In the morning I got a Subway before we left Cardiff and I thought this would be the end of the weekend binge, but I ended up going to Dad's Monday afternoon and we went to Harvester. Doh!
Anyway, today I was back at the gym for a lovely run. I was planning on ding upper body weights, but I really wasn't feeling it after a tiring 6 mile run with a bit of a sprint at the end, so I just did some bicep curls and tricep things.
I'm off to my mate's now, but I'm determined to avoid the snacks, so hopefully he won't have any available! What I must do though is actually eat some sort of meal.

Friday 24 June 2011

Day 5

Yeaaaaaaah! 5 days in a row complete! It's a nice feeling. I don't think I'll be doing this every week, in fact, I probably shouldn't? I am feeling quite sore. but I would like to come 5 times a week, just broken up by days off.

I was probably going to meet my mate there, but I fell asleep for a bit and was a bit later than I meant to be. Pretty gym lady was at reception when I got there. She's very pretty... pretty. First off I went on a run at 8.30 minute miles for 5.7 miles. I could feel that I'd been 4 days in a row previously as I felt generally sore, but nothing was too painful so I carried on and was able to pull out a 1 minute 'sprint' finish thing at the end. After that I did the usual run through all of the leg weights.

I went to get a drink at one point and one of the staff members was in there so I asked what I could do to increase the workout for my thighs because I can do the highest weights on one of the machines. He suggested doing something called 'crazy 8s', which involves starting at the lowest weight, doing 8 reps, and then moving up through every weight and back down again. The only break you're meant to have is when you stop to change the weight. Sounds horrible, but a challenge :)

I've been pestered about going out tonight, but I really don't fancy working with a hangover tomorrow and I'm going out Saturday night, but either way, the next 2-3 days aren't going to be great for my health  because I'm going to a gig in Cardiff on Sunday with me Mum and we're going to Pizza Express beforehand! Cashhback!

I bought some strawberries and bananas after work earlier so I might make a smoothie now! Nom nom nom!

Thursday 23 June 2011

Day 4

Today has been a day of soreness. I got woken up at about 8 by a phone call from work saying they'd like me to come in at 9/10 cause someone called in sick. Obviously I opted to go in at 10 and I was there until 10. About halfway through the day I noticed that I was very sore. But rather than my legs, like you'd assume, as I did them the day befre, it was my arms and chest that was causing problems. I was slightly concerned because my plan was to do upper body work tonight, but it wasn't too bad so I did it anyway.

I just got back from the gym and, after a 10 minute fast run thing I went through the upper body equipment in the gym. I am now tired, but feeling good. Also, a girl I knew was at the gym and she said that I looked different. She thought I looked a bit taller, which I guess means I look like I've lost weight?

Tonight is going to be an early night for work at 6 and then I plan on getting home, eating, and going off to the gym again! Let's see how that goes!

Wednesday 22 June 2011

Day 3

Look at that, it's Wednesday. Last night was a reet laff, though, we turned up at my mate's house at 6 cause he said come round any time after 6, and he wasn't even there... His Mum let us in and said we could hang around, but we opted to go to the Pub for a few cheeky pints and to keep my mate company who works there. 6 hours later and I've had many-a-drink and we ended up driving to McDonalds for a healthy treat... My calorie count for yesterday is not a nice site.
Today is the day that I must make up for this. I'm already half way there, having been to the gym. I started off with a bit of a hill run. The random hill setting on the treadmill is strange. I'm not sure I like the machine dictating the pace for you...
That was pretty knackering, so I had a nice little chat about people's knees, as you do, and then did my favourite leg weights, followed by every other leg weight in the gym. A mate in there set me the challenge of upping one of my weights on a machine by a couple of notches and I was surprised to find I could do it. I think I've said it already, but I love my legs :D
I had to wait a while to use one of the machines because there was a girl sat on it who I'm pretty sure wasn't doing anything at all. I also chucked in some press-ups and leg raise crossover thingies for a bit of core workout and then wandered on home. I say wandered, but I was actually given a lift. Lucky I did some stretches, eh?
Just had an omelette and am very surprised at how low in calories they can be! I was going to cook my own tea at 5/6ish, but the Step Dad assures me that the curry he's planning on making won't be too late and tat I shouldn't do that. I won't be surprised if it is ready after 7.30 though.

Tuesday 21 June 2011

Day 2

So yesterday I said that I want to start going to the gym 5 times a week, and I've decided that I'm going to go every weekday(who knows, maybe I'll go on the weekend too?).
Second day in and all is going well, as I just got back. I got up at 10 to have some breakfast and then went to the gym at just gone 12. I was thinking about doing a long run, but when I got there I decided I'd do a shorter run at a faster pace, so I ended up doing 5.25 miles at 8.30 m/m and then 'sprinted' the last 30 seconds or so. Then I went on to do a load of upper body stuff and ended up feeling quite sick. I'm not sure if it's because I hadn't left long enough since eating(though an hour and a half must be enough?) or because I wasn't used to doing all the upper body stuff/I worked too hard. I feel really good though and I feel like I'm doing more complete workouts now and that if I keep this up I'll be working towards a more toned body all over, which is what I would like!
Also, I'm quite proud of myself because I went to the pub last night and managed to avoid drinking alcohol completely! I did have three pints of diet coke, which I know is still bad, but I'd prefer to be drinking that than 5 pints of Ashton Press. I am, however, going to my mate's pre-Glastonbury barbecue and will definitely be drinking at that. I'll see as a reward for avoiding it yesterday though :)
Hopefully I won't be too hungover for the gym tomorrow!

Monday 20 June 2011

Time to get serious!

I've been too casual up to now. I'm pleased with how the running itself is going, but I don't go to the gym consistently enough and often end up not going for 3 days. I'm going to start going on days to do stuff that doesn't include running, like upper body work and mix things up with a long cycle or some more rowing. I reckon this way it will keep things fresher and I will be more likely to keep it up. I also want to go more often, 5 days a week, say, so I can't get out of doing stuff like press-ups/planks/leg raises etc.
Today I did a relatively high intensive run, going for a minute at 7mph and then 30 seconds at 9.5mph. I did that for 15 minutes with a 30 sec 10mph finish and I ended up running about 2.2 miles. I was pretty knackered at the end, but felt like I hadn't done much and I ended up sing all the leg weights in the gym and doing some leg raises as well.
i feel quite good about it and I don't want to go and ruin it now by having a cheese and tomato sandwich, which is what I really want! I had some ravioli as my pre-gym meal and don't want loads more carbs, ideally, but I don't want to have to wait until tea time! I want to avoid this especially today though because I'm going to the pub later and the chances are I'll have a couple of pints, even though I know I shouldn't. No idea what I'm having for tea as well. probably something relatively fattening as Mum seems to be in that kind of mood at the moment. We also eat really late, and although I'm happy to cook for myself earlier(my Step Dad doesn't get back from work until 7 or later most of the time), Mum often doesn't want me to do that for some reason. I definitely fancy chicken tonight.

Sunday 19 June 2011

Failure

I had good intentions today. I wanted to go for a run, it just didn't happen. I had a little nap after work and then went off to the gym, only to find the entrance and exit closed. I'm guessing that it is closed for Father's Day, but I don't really know why. I could have gone for a run somewhere else, but I didn't really feel like it and will just go tomorrow. I want to make some sort of plan now so it's easier to have an idea of what I'm supposed to be doing each day and also to help motivate myself.

Saturday 18 June 2011

Rough...

Having worked the past three days, I've let that be an excuse to not really exercise properly. As I've said before, I'm not the biggest fan of going to the gym in the evening and that's the only time I've been able to go. I did go on Thursday though. That was not a pleasant run. It was only short, 15 minutes or so, and was only 1.5 miles, but I did it on a constant uphill slope. I didn't use the random hill setting cause I find the varying speeds annoying, so I just moved the slope randomly myself. I didn't have it flat very often and I tired very quickly. I had already done some leg weights as well because the treadmills were full when I got in, so my legs were quite tired already. It wasn't the most intense session on the whole though because a few of my mates were there so it turned in to more of a social event.
Today's plan was going to involve going to the gym, but after going out last night and having a bit too much to drink I'm not sure it's a good idea. I am not feeling great. I think I might just rest up today, partly because I don't want this hangover to carry over to my 6am start at work tomorrow.
Mum has had the cricket on all morning, and while I'm not the biggest fan of cricket, I now have quite a temptation to play some Brian Lara Cricket... Going old school.

Sunday 12 June 2011

No Pain, No Gain

Today's exercise involved sprinting. Lovely sprinting...
I went down to one of the school Football pitches and as I walked on there was someone with a dog and I thought it might be a caretaker, so I hid... I went back out again and he was walking towards me, but it turned out he was just some guy so I asked him if he thought I could run around a bit on the pitch and he said he didn't know. Pfft, what's the worst that could happen if I get caught?
Turns out they've taken down the nets and replaced most of the pitch markings with a running track, so I had to make my own little markers with my hoodie and water bottle. I didn't really know what I was doing but I did various sprints and spring/jog alternating things. It was horrible, and I was only doing it for about 15 minutes. I'll have to keep doing it and hopefully I'll improve soon!
Time for pub(again) now and then Bournemouth tomorrow to visit my mate and get absolutely slaughtered most probably...

Saturday 11 June 2011

Landmark

Today is a good day! Today is the first time I have ever reached the 8 mile mark. I think I could have run further, as I was only doing 10 minute miles, but I decided to listening to the 'no more than 10% increase' rule. I did a 'sprint' finish(6.30 minute miles) at around 7.75 miles and I was quite pleased that I managed to do that for just over a quarter of a mile. I did some triceps and chest weights as well but that was more because I thought I should do something else.
Now to chill for the rest of the day. I kind of want to do some more exercise, or buy something exercise related or, shock horror, even go to work! I actually had my first shift back at the Co-Op for about a year and a half after I stopped at the start of my first year of Uni cause it was a bit of a pain going back all the time. There's quite a lot of new staff but the people I worked with yesterday were way cool. The good and bad thing about working in a village is that you know a lot of the people. It makes the job easier because you can have a bit of idle chat but it also means you have to make an effort to talk to everyone all the time. Apparently I'm liked though cause a lot of people commented on my return. I was only meant to be doing a 5 hour shift but it turned in to 8 hours because someone didn't turn up. Couldn't have been any less busy really though so it was an easy evening's work.
Tomorrow is another day of work and back to the ol' Sunday shifts, but not starting at 6am this time. I used to like those shifts though really because I really dislike working evenings. I hate IDing people as it makes me feel really uncomfortable. I can't imagine many lairy 16 year olds coming in between 11 and 6 on a Sunday to be all of the beers though so I'll probably be alright. The thing I'm looking forward to tomorrow though, sort of, is my first training aimed specifically at Football. I'm gonna go down to one of the school Football pitches and sneak in like a ninja(not everyone can climb a stile) and run the length then sprint the width as many times as I can, I'm really quite excited to get fit for Football!
Anyway, after having a delicious cheese and tomato sandwich, I am going to have a bath to sooth my calves!

Thursday 9 June 2011

Gym Buddy

When I'm at the gym, I normally prefer it to be empty. What I don't like is when someone is on the treadmill directly beside me. it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable and I often feel like I'm probably being judged. I know it's stupid and something I need to get over it.
I wandered in to the gym at about 3.15 today and thought it would probably be quite quiet, but there were a few people in and someone on the treadmill. No matter, I thought, and just went on the other end one, but then a woman(or girl, she looked very young from the corner of my eye) got on to the treadmill next to me. Oh god, a woman on the treadmill next to me is scary! I feel like I'm in competition and I also think that they'd find me pathetic. Anyway, I carried on, trying to ignore my new running buddy and ended up running 4 miles and then a 'sprint' finish. Felt quite good about it actually.
There was only one person left in the gym once I finished on the treadmill and I often feel bad that I have my headphones in the whole time. I can't help but feel I might befriend some people if I didn't listen to music the whole time. Maybe I should try it some time.
Next I was planning on doing some cycling and rowing, but I decided to give that a miss in favour of some lovely leg weight type things. The outer thigh workout is... strange. Every time I do the first rep, pushing my legs out sideways, it feels like something around my groin area does something bad. There's often a noticeable click and I can really feel it! Anyway, I did those and then some calf and quad things, which I love doing cause I can do the heaviest weight on the quads one :D
I finished off on the mat doing some leg raises and planks etc. My stomach was killing and my calf obviously took a battering because my left calf was hurting on the walk home.
Before I went to the gym I couldn't help but buy some new exercisey stuff so I looked for some deals on Sportsdirect.com. I ended up getting some Nike 2 in 1 shorts, some undershorts and some tracksuit bottoms(doh). I'm quite excited about them arriving actually!
My work will, once again, go to waste tonight though as I'm going to the pub, or possibly in to town as people are trying to drag me in... I have my first shift back at my old job tomorrow as well. I could try and not drink much, but I just know that won't happen.

Wednesday 8 June 2011

UK's Number One!

Now that I have a Summer job confirmed I feel I need to buy some new exercise clothing.
I've been checking the Villa site, cause obviously I want to run around looking like a Villa fanboy, but they only have the home kit in XXL and XXXL (I'm assuming the other sizes are sold out?). Now, I'm not small, but I'm pretty sure just a Large would be big enough. Funnily enough though, they do have the away kit in all sizes... but for £10 more...
I was going to get the whole home kit, so I guess I'll have to wait. I had a look at the fashion section and considered buying some jogging bottoms... I feel bad just saying that. I often judge people who wear jogging bottoms out and about (yeah, I'm an awful person), but they look so comfy. A couple of my mates wear them and it does make me want them, but I don't know if I can go ahead with it. Instead I think I'll get some tracksuit bottoms because they are obviously an ENTIRELY different thing...
I do need something for when the weather is a bit colder and I do often feel a bit self-conscious in shorts, especially sat down on a machine. I always wonder if there was a bad angle you could glance at me from.
I'm looking at Sports Direct as well, but because I'm cool I think I'm gonna try and stick with Villa merchandise. I also have an image that any Sports Direct stuff would be delivered by a man singing the tune from the advert.

Home Alone

I have been home alone now for the last 9 days as my Mum and Step Dad have gone to Sri Lanka for 10 days. I normally look forward to looking after the house, but this time has been extremely tedious. For the first 5 days there was no one around as the majority of my mates are still at Uni, though I have had someone round most nights. The main problem has been the dogs as they are driving me insane. One of them insists on peeing on the floor most days, which often ends in me having soggy socks. Both of them ripped up the bin bags outside and scattered rubbish everywhere and one of them barks WAY too much. I love them, but I really wish they'd shut up!
I'm afraid I may be killing half of the plants as well. I've been watering them all, but probably not enough. I'm definitely not made for gardening.
Anyway, yesterday I was meant to go to the gym in the evening, and I did. My mate came down at about 7 and we watched some really exciting *cough* cricket and then went down to the gym. I don't like going at night because it's normally busier and I often see people I know. It's nice to see people, but I often feel judged when people I know are at the gym. The main reason I sometimes go with friends is because it's much harder to make an excuse not to go if they're picking me up.
We couldn't stay for that long because my mate's sister had had an induction and probably didn't want to be there for 3 hours, but as it turned out, she was there for 2 and a half hours. No idea what she did all that time.
I wanted to do a shorter run at a faster pace than I'd normally go, so I set off at 7mph, which I believe is 8.37 minute miles. I'd normally do 10 minute miles so it's quite a bit faster than when I've run for 7 miles. I ran this for around half an hour and then ended with a 9mph 'sprint' finish for a minute or so. I ended doing over 4 miles and was quite happy with it. My mate said he wanted to go in 5 minutes, so I did a quick random hill thing on the bike which was HORRIBLE!
Even though it was a short sesh, I felt quite good about it. I threw it all away last night though by having a couple of mates over and drinking too much...

Cocka-Doodle-No...

Now comes the real test. I'm not going to the gym today because, well, I'm just not...  Not two days in a row just yet. Instead I'm hoping to do some ab exercises and maybe some weights. The problem here is motivating myself when it would be easy to sit here at the computer, while glancing over at Sky Sports News on the tele, which is what is happening right now. All I need to do is some press-ups, planks, leg raises etc. and possibly some weights. I can't help but think it would be easier to make myself do it if I wasn't so bloody annoyed by the persistent noise coming from a certain Cockerel. Does he not know how annoying that stupid noise is?
Anyway, I suppose I better get doing something before England are on later because I'm not doing exercise while I'm filled up on cider...

Finally

So, after faffing about for a week, I finally got myself together and went to the gym. The excuse I've made to myself is that "Oh, there's a week left until the offer, so I'll go then". Obviously, I could have done some exercise at home...
Anyway, I've joined up for 3 months for the very respectable price of £40 off-peak! I'm hoping to go at least 3 times a week and I should also be playing Football at least once a week. If I keep to this I'll have a fantastic beach bod for when I don't go on holiday...
Anyway, I went along today and joined up, disappointed that the lovely lady staff member wasn't at reception and had my first go at interval training. I didn't follow any sort of plan and probably did it completely wrong. 1 minute at 7.5 mph then 30 seconds at 9 mph and so on. I did this for about 20 minutes and was pretty tired. The main reason I want to do this is to get fit for Football so that I might have enough confidence to join a team.
I went with a mate and he was using all the weights, so after a go on the bike I did a few leg weights.
Doing the thigh and calf weights at the gym makes me feel really good about myself because I, for some reason, have really strong legs and can do the heaviest quads weight. If only my fitness was as strong as my legs :|
I didn't come out of the gym feeling knackered, but that's probably because I did a few casual planks/stomach-based exercise at the end and didn't properly push myself.
Now I'm home I've put all the calories back on with a couple of BLTs and will probably add to that with something fattening for tea. I'm thinking Enchiladas?

Work, work, work

So, I haven't been around recently to update you on my thrilling life because I've had lots of Uni work on! I made the usual mistake of being too casual with my work over Easter and not doing any until the last week of the holidays. This left me in a bit of a pickle as I found out 5 days before a hand-in that it was in a week earlier than I thought. Cue getting up early and working late in to the night for 5 days.

After this I had 4 more assignments that I hadn't done much on, so the next week and a half consisted of work the majority of the time, stopping for either a game of Football (this being the only exercise I did) or going to the shop to get some horribly unhealthy snacky food. In fact, over the two weeks I was back at Uni doing my work, I didn't cook for myself once, apart from a couple of pizzas in the oven. Awful!

The thing that stopped me going mad through this was Football. I probably played about 8 times over two weeks, including a five-a-side tournament at Uni, which was awesome! We got through the group stage, but were then drawn one of the Uni Football teams and were thrashed 4-0. Still, it was great!

Anyway, Summer holidays are here now and the only work I to worry about is my job at the Co-Op (and an annoying essay in for August, but that's aaaaaages away), which I will be starting again soon. Joy.

Time to be healthy again! Or so I thought. It hasn't really gone to plan just yet, but I did go to the gym for a 7.2 mile run and 2.5km row yesterday, so that's good! The quiche for lunch today was probably a mistake though. None of my friends are back from Uni, so I won't be going out much for a few weeks, but apparently today is a write off because I am also going to a pub quiz with my one mate who is home. Bring on the burger and chips and lovely calorific ciders!

Powercut

I woke up yesterday morning wondering one; why had I been sleeping on my phone, and two; why I couldn't switch my CD player on. We quite commonly get power shortages in my house, but you can normally just flip the switch back on. However, after forcing myself out of bed(or, sofa, because the actual bed of my sofa bed is horrible), I realised it was a full blown powercut. This terrified me because I have a lot of work to do that's in for very soon and I really didn't want to go back to Uni sooner than I had to.
I'd just had breakfast so I couldn't go straight to the gym, but I decided I'd leave it an hour and then go, assuming the gym would probably be in full working order, despite being less than a mile away. Luckily, we got power back just before I left, which calmed my nerves, but when I arrived at the gym their power was still down. This meant no working treadmill and defeated the point of me going to the gym really... I still had to pay the full £4.20 for it's services and thought I might as well go in because I'd walked up. I ended up doing just a 20 minute random hill session on the bike, 2.5km rowing and then some tricep work. Wasn't the best gym trip, but I guess it was better than being sat at home doing nothing, which is what I'm doing today. Though, I say nothing, but what I really mean is being sat in front of the computer looking blankly at the horrible piece of work I'm trying to do that makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever and that I have to present in 3 days...

Gym Sesh

Today I decided I'd drag myself to the gym because I hadn't done any proper exercise in 6 days. So, after sorting out shopping etc. in the village, I got to it.
It turned out to be another successful run where I went for 7 miles! Couldn't have been more pleased. I had to fight off quite a few stitches, but these seemed to go away quite quickly whenever I swapped the foot I was breathing on. I think I was also aided by a very attractive red head rowing in front of me and then running alongside me. Pathetic, I know, but I didn't really want to stop while she was running alongside me, so I didn't even really think about doing so!
Finished off by doing 2.5km rowing and then strolled home, very slowly.
My knees are aching loads now though, so I think tomorrow will be a rest day. Though, I've got to be up at 4.30-5 to go and film sunrise... what fun!

Disappointing Few Days

The last few days haven't really gone to plan. I was meant to go for a run yesterday, but didn't feel up to it. Not that I have anyone to blame other than myself, as the night before involved drinking and a late night. While I had fun, I feel I have let myself down by leaving myself with a hangover that prevented me going out.
Today is another story though. Today I just cannot be bothered. I was up at 10, but Football Manager seemed much more appealing that stepping outside. I'm also finding it really hard to motivate myself to run here because the surrounding area is really hilly and I don't think I'll be able to get very far. There is the gym, but the excuse I've made for myself is that I'm home alone, so can't leave the dogs for 2 hours while I go, cause that would be mean, obviously.
What's worse is that tonight is going to be an unhealthy night and a late night again.
My only hope for today is that I do some planks, crunches and press-ups or something. Possibly in front of the Arsenal vs. Man U game...

Gym Win

Today was the day that I ran again. I was going to get up at 7.30 and go at 8.30 or something. That didn't happen. Instead, I got over to the gym at about 11 and, after buying a bottle of water because I stupidly forgot to bring my own, got on the treadmill.

I thought that I would probably run about two miles and then be knackered, but it went much better than that! I stuck my hoodie over the monitor(I always find that seeing my distance and time makes me get tired much faster) and ran at 10 minute miles. I clearly run too fast normally, because running at that pace was really comfortable. I still started to tire and got stitches, but it felt good. I got myself in to a nice breathing pattern as well and felt really happy with how it was going.

After a while I decided that I better stop before I get completely knackered because I wanted to cycle and row as well. When I took my top off it revealed that I had run 6.5 miles! I was so happy to see that, mainly because I'd been running for 65 minutes. After that I cycled for 10 minutes and then rowed 2.5km, just for a bit of a warm down and to work my upper body a bit.

I felt absolutely brilliant and was buzzing when I got home. Though I didn't feel so great when I went to play Football a couple of hours later. My legs clearly weren't happy with me, and I'm bloody stiff now, but what a great day!

Tuesday 26 April 2011

Getting back to business

Right, I haven't been for a run for about two weeks now and it's getting silly. My foot feels much better, so I have decided that tomorrow is the day that I will stick on my trainers and get going again.
Admittedly, it has been my own fault... Playing Football again and then getting involved at a gig while drunk probably weren't the best things to do with a bad foot. Anyway, the swelling seems to have gone down and there isn't any pain walking, so bring on tomorrow!

Tuesday 19 April 2011

Silly Boy...

Sons should always listen to their Mother's...
"Don't go to Football, you won't get any sympathy if you injure yourself more" she said.
I thought, no! I want to play Football! So I decided to go along, thinking I'd take it easy. I put my insoles in to my astro turf trainers to try and decrease the risk of further injury. They had been too tight before but seemed ok now I'd worn them a few times.
Had a little kick around with a few mates before the masses got there to try and warm up and I seemed fine for the first half and hour, but then it all went a bit pear-shaped. About 40 minutes in I rolled my ankle in the same fashion that I got my injury in the first place. I immediately went in goal to rest a bit and it seemed ok after five minutes, but when I started running again I noticed I had a bit of a groin strain and my heels were now killing because of my insoles. Turns out the trainers weren't loose enough.
Why couldn't I have just stayed at home?... Now I've got some lovely blisters, my foot will stay bruised longer and a lovely groin strain.
Was an excuse to have a lovely bath though!
I'm not telling Mum she was right.

Sunday 17 April 2011

Foot...

Friday was a great day. I played a great game of Football with my mates, then went to the Pub and ended up going in to town!
Unfortunately, I rolled my ankle at Football, but that seemed to be ok after 5 minutes. When I got home my foot was painful to walk on, but I didn't think much of it because it didn't cause me any trouble out in town. However, I woke up on Saturday morning, stepped out of bed and it bloody hurt! Looked at it and there was a bruise along the bottom of my foot below the ankle and also some swelling.
Not sure that it's a particularly bad injury, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to run the 10k now and also really annoyed because I won't be able to play Football next week at all. I need to become less injury prone!

Fail

So, today I was meant to go for a run. That didn't happen...
After a fun night round a friends for Champions League disappointment(for unfortunate Tottenham fans), I was meant to come home and get some good sleep for a 7.30am run. This was hindered when I couldn't find my keys so ended up staying round and not getting to sleep until gone 3.
Thankfully, I found my keys in the morning, but that hasn't stopped today from being spent in Waitrose and in front of my Mac.
Today's goal is now to avoid alcohol tonight at the Pub and get up early tomorrow instead!
Fingers crossed!

New Route!

So today I tried running on the cycle path for the first time. After having a wander yesterday, I felt I knew which was the best way to run there. I also thought that my iMST app would measure the distance for me, but it decided it didn't want to(though, it was probably something I did wrong).

When my alarm went off I somehow justified putting getting up off for another 15 minutes, and then eventually forced myself up and had my banana. I set off on my run at my normal pace of about 8 minute miles, which was fine for a while.

I was slightly worried that I'd go wrong somewhere and miss the cycle path like I did on my walk yesterday but, after about 7 minutes of running, I found it. This gave me a boost, but it didn't last long as I started to flag. I had to slow down, but this turned out to be a good thing. Running at something around a 10 minute mile was much more comfortable and I kept it up for the rest of the run.

I've tried to run at a slower pace before, but I get a bit self-conscious and think people will judge me. Without all the cars driving past I didn't seem to worry. Probably because everyone else on the cycle path is exercising ans they know that not everyone can run at superhuman pace!

I got back to my door feeling knackered, but that's mainly because of the nasty hill just before my house. I did NOT enjoy that! Despite being knackered, I felt very good about the run as a whole and the fact that I'd run 36 minutes, my longest yet, and probably could have run for longer. As my app didn't want to work I don't know exactly how far it was. But it must have been between 3.5-4 miles. Yay!

After that, some lovely cold buttered toast, nom nom noms! Now for lectures and revision all day, or more likely an hour of Facebook and then back to my house...

Monday 11 April 2011

Wayward Walk

Today is a 'day off' (not that I run particularly hard anyway, hah), but I decided that, instead of sitting inside all day, I'd go for a walk.
When I started, I pictured a nice straight long walk along what I thought was the cycle path. As it turned out, it wasn't, it was just a path along the river, which ended up leading me in to a field and then a road going in the wrong direction...
Retracing my steps, I realised I hadn't crossed a bridge that I needed to. After doing this, it still turned out to be the wrong bloody way and I spent 20 minutes walking across a different field that I thought was a bit of the cycle path until I hit the actual cycle path and followed it back towards my house.
Turned out to be an 8km walk that I'm very happy I went on. I also now know where the cycle path is and can start running there to avoid cars going by shouting abuse at me. People are lovely.

New start! Training for Bristol 10k

Ok, so I'm gonna change the way I'm doing these posts now.

Basically, I've now got apps and stuff that I put my food intake in to so I don't really feel the need to post a food diary any more because it would just be for the sake of it. However, I would like to post ramblings about my running and general activities.

The last two weeks I've really been getting in to running three or four times a week, and I feel great for it! I can only run about 3 miles at the moment, but you've got to start somewhere, right!?
I should be running the Bristol 10k in 5 weeks though, so I need to improve fast!

Anyway, I will update this blog on my runs and activities for anyone who cares or wants to tell me how bad my writing is :D

Sunday 27 February 2011

Bad Foot

I haven't posted for about 10 days and I haven't run much since then. I've somehow managed to pull a muscle in the arch of my foot, or something, probably because of my unsuitable running footwear. I have been keeping up with other exercises ie. press-ups, squats, sit-ups(or some sort of stomach exercise) and weights, but I'm missing the main weight loss exercise, which isn't great!
I have been trying to keep on top of eating well, though this weekend hasn't been the greatest because of a double dose of bad news.

Tuesday 15 February 2011

Bad Couple of Days...

I had a bit of a lapse today and yesterday, not going to the gym at all and eating rather unhealthily.
Yesterday, as well as a Quorn korma, I also had a burger and chips at the Beau Nash, along with a few pints and a cake. Was a bit better today, but still had a small amount of snacky things :S
Gym tomorrow.

I did manage to do my press-ups and sit-ups over the last two days though, keeping to 100 of each a day.

Weekly review

I will endeavour to do a weekly review every Sunday or Monday of how well I have exercised and eaten. Here's me first! I'll be starting at Tuesday though because I have no records of previous days.

Today was my first day back at the gym for a while. While it was a struggle, it felt good and was good to get off to a start!

I also went out this night. One of two nights out this week, which isn't great :S Cider isn't going to help the weight loss!

Thursday 10th Feb

Lunch - 2 tuna mayo wraps with lettuce, tomato and cucumber.
Tea - 1 chicken burger in 2 pittas with tomato, cucumber, lettuce and pepper salad.

Friday 11th Feb

While I didn't have the healthiest of days food-wise, I did go to the park with a few mates and play around 2 and a half hours of football. That's got to have burnt off quite a few calories! :)

Sunday 13th Feb

Lunch - 2 Cheese and tomato sandwiches.
Snack - 5/6 chocolate digestives :S
Tea - 1 pitta with feta, tomato and cucumber.

Lazy daaaaaaaay! No exercise at all! We'll call it 'rest day'.

How Do I Feel?

I feel pretty good about the week gone by. I think I stack really well to my plan within the week and didn't really eat many unhealthy foods at all, while also keeping busy with some sort of exercise! The weekend was a bit naughty, but I definitely want to allow myself one day a week where I don't have to think about what I eat as much!
Hopefully I can keep this up!

Running - 2 miles
Rowing - 1 kilometre

Introduction

Hey, I'm Jack and I'm just starting a blog to keep track of my progress with exercise.
I've been wanting to start losing weight and get fitter for a long time, but have never really bothered to properly follow it through. I'm really hoping to do better this time!
As well as going to the gym, I am also aiming to alternate between sit-ups and press-ups one day, and then weights and sit-ups the next, as well as eating much healthier and avoiding takeaways and the like.

I actually starting properly eating healthy and doing press-ups etc. about a week or so ago, but have now decided to blog it because I feel it will help keep me motivated and will be a good way of keeping track of what I've done.

I'm pretty unfit, so it's gonna be a slow start!
Also, on Wednesday I weighed myself at 14st. I will try and keep track of my weight weekly!
